Test deployment of armed guard robots on the Korean border

Written by Aleksander Vrcko (26-01-2007)

South Korean company Samsung developed with state fundings SGR-A1, the "Intelligent Surveillance & Security Guard Robot". The project entered an active testing phase when 3 units were deployed at the border to North Korea. The robot is armed with a rifle or light machine gun, can recognize targets 2km away in daylight or 1km away in darkness, and is mounted to the ground.

The 3 tested robots scans the area with CCD sensors and infrared cameras. When it recognizes a potential target it is able to query the target for a password. If the target cannot provide the correct password, the robots are authorized to to kill the target with their modified M16 rifles.

The public specification for this device can be found here.
